Mariners Finish April Strong, Approaching Tough Stretch

Week 5 Recap

4/30 Mariners Yankees PPD
5/1 Mariners 4 Yankees 2 W
5/2 Mariners 4 Astros 5 L/11
5/3 Mariners 9 Astros 8 W
5/4 Mariners 8 Astros 7 W

Well that was a fun week. The Mariners scored 31 runs in 5 games on the road but the bullpen made three of those games more exciting than they should have been. It seems like that’s becoming a regular occurrence. “Sweeping (one of the games was rained out)” the Yankees in New York was pretty great and we won the series in Houston. Now, if only we could score that many runs at home.

  • The Mariners enter play this week with a better record than the Red Sox, the Rays, and the Indians–all preseason contenders. We’re tied for the seventh best record in the AL–right in the middle of the pack–and are just a single game back in the wild card race. This season is far from over, but its nice to see us make some positive steps especially after that eight game losing streak.

Spring Training 2014, Outfield Preview

Last week I previewed the Mariners infield; this week I’ll tackle the outfield. Where the Mariners have been able to develop a number of strong infielders, the organization has been almost completely incapable of developing any major league talent in the outfield. They’re hoping to change that trend this year with the promotions of Abraham Almonte and potentially Stefen Romero. Dustin Ackley and Michael Saunders are the returning incumbents and their inconsistent play has made them a pain to project. There is some upside here but this position group is clearly one of the team’s weaknesses.

Mariners Rebound After Meltdown in Boston

Week 18 Recap

Date Away Team Score Home Team Score Result
7/29
7/30 Mariners 2 Red Sox 8 L
7/31 Mariners 4 Red Sox 5 L/15
8/1 Mariners 7 Red Sox 8 L
8/2 Mariners 8 Orioles 11 L
8/3 Mariners 8 Orioles 4 W
8/4 Mariners 3 Orioles 2 W

The Mariners started the week with a tough series in Boston against one of the best teams in the AL. A sweep later and the Mariners were off to Baltimore. The last two games in the Boston series were particularly frustrating losses; our #1 and #2 starters didn’t factor into either decision and both were walk-off losses, one in the fifteenth and one in the ninth. After losses like that, you might expect a disheartened team to throw in the towel against a good Baltimore team but the Mariners bounced back and scored 19 runs in three games against the Orioles, winning two of three.

Mariners Win, In Dogfight for Third Place

Week 11 Recap

  • The Mariners actually had a good week this week. We took two of three from both the Astros and the Athletics and Mike Zunino began showing us why he was such a valuable prospect. Getting the series win against the Astros was a relief despite losing a winnable game on Wednesday via a Tom Wilhelmsen blowup. Winning against the Athletics was a surprise, however. The Athletics had been one of the hottest teams in the majors going in to that series and we played them very competitively. All in all, I’d say it was a successful week.

Mariners Kill Two Birds With Thirty Runs

Week 5 Recap

5/4 Blue Jays 1 Mariners 8 W
5/5 Blue Jays 10 Mariners 2 L
  • The Mariners took two of three from both the Orioles and the Blue Jays and have now won seven of their last ten games. It seems like the team is beginning to heat up after a month of frustration. We do have to remember who our most recent opponents have been though. The Angels and Blue Jays both came into the season with expectations sky high and have disappointed in the early goings. Our last three opponents have pitching staffs that rank in the bottom third of the league. So the Mariners have been beating up on weak teams, that’s necessary for any competitive team. I’ll start believing the Mariners have turned a corner when they start beating quality teams like the Athletics or the Yankees.

A Double Helping of Mariners Goodness

This is the first in a new series of weekly recaps for the 2013 Seattle Mariners season. Every Monday, I’ll recap the past week’s games, take a look at individual performances and preview the upcoming week. I missed the first week so this week only will be a double helping of Mariners goodness.

Week 1 & 2 Recap

Date Home Team Score Away Team Score Result
4/1 Athletics 0 Mariners 2 W
4/2 Athletics 1 Mariners 7 W
4/3 Athletics 6 Mariners 2 L
4/4 Athletics 8 Mariners 2 L
4/5 White Sox 7 Mariners 8 W/10
4/6 White Sox 4 Mariners 3 L
4/7 White Sox 4 Mariners 3 L/10
4/8 Mariners 3 Astros 0 W
4/9 Mariners 9 Astros 16 L
4/10 Mariners 3 Astros 8 L
4/11 Mariners 3 Rangers 4 L
4/12 Mariners 3 Rangers 1 W
4/13 Mariners 1 Rangers 3 L
4/14 Mariners 4 Rangers 3 W
  • The Mariners got off to a decent start on the road splitting their series in Oakland and coming very close to winning the series in Chicago. Once the Mariners got home, their results were a mixed bag, losing their series with Houston and splitting their series with the Rangers. Overall, I think it was a positive two weeks, especially considering the state of our rotation and the injuries to Michael Saunders and Mike Morse.
