Mariners Roller Coaster Dips, Lose Five Straight

The pendulum swung the other way for the Mariners this week. We finished our series with the Rays with a win over David Price. We came home to begin our eight game homestand and proceeded to lay an egg against the Yankees and Rangers, losing five straight. One of those losses was a 1-0 defeat where Felix threw 8+ innings of shutout ball but the bullpen–and a Robinson Cano error–coughed up the loss. A five game losing streak isn’t the end of the world, especially with how close the race for the Wild Card is at this point in the season. If we’re able to hang around .500 into August, we’ll have a good shot at contending for the Wild Card in September. All we need is another swing of the pendulum back towards the positive side and we’ll be fine.

Mariners Rebound After Meltdown in Boston

The Mariners started the week with a tough series in Boston against one of the best teams in the AL. A sweep later and the Mariners were off to Baltimore. The last two games in the Boston series were particularly frustrating losses; our #1 and #2 starters didn’t factor into either decision and both were walk-off losses, one in the fifteenth and one in the ninth. After losses like that, you might expect a disheartened team to throw in the towel against a good Baltimore team but the Mariners bounced back and scored 19 runs in three games against the Orioles, winning two of three.

  • Well, that was an eventful week. Obviously, the biggest news is the roster shake up. Gone are Jesus Montero, Dustin Ackley, Robert Andino, and Lucas Luetge. In their place, Nick Franklin, Carlos Triunfel, Jesus Sucre, and Hector Noesi have been called up from AAA-Tacoma. I’ll discuss these moves below, but the short version is, it’s about time. I definitely wasn’t rooting for their demotions, the success of the Mariners is pretty directly tied to the success of these young players. But it had gotten to a point where the level of competition and pressure in the majors was detrimental to their development. Now we get to see if Franklin has anything to offer and if Montero and Ackley are able to turn their careers around.

  • The Mariners took two of three from both the Orioles and the Blue Jays and have now won seven of their last ten games. It seems like the team is beginning to heat up after a month of frustration. We do have to remember who our most recent opponents have been though. The Angels and Blue Jays both came into the season with expectations sky high and have disappointed in the early goings. Our last three opponents have pitching staffs that rank in the bottom third of the league. So the Mariners have been beating up on weak teams, that’s necessary for any competitive team. I’ll start believing the Mariners have turned a corner when they start beating quality teams like the Athletics or the Yankees.

  • Well that was an interesting week. After dropping two of three to the Astros, the Mariners returned home to face the Angels and won three out of four. We’re now sitting in sole possession of third place in the AL West despite losing four of six against the Astros. If we had just gone 4-2 against them, we would be just one game behind Oakland and four behind Texas.

  • The Mariners had some tough pitching matchups this week, facing Doug Fister, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and Yu Darvish all in the span of four days. But they didn’t do any better against the likes of Nick Tepesch, Derek Lowe, and Justin Grimm. Mariner hitters were flailing at pitches this week with a combined total of seventy-two strikeouts. Their swing happy ways are reflected in their record this week. We we’re lucky to escape with a single win (against Justin Verlander!).

Spring Training 2013, Infield Report

Welcome to the next entry in my Spring Training report series. I’ve covered the starting rotation already. This week we’ll take a look at the Mariners infield which is chalk full of youth and a few new faces. Overall, this group was not very strong last year with poor showings from Justin Smoak, Dustin Ackley, and Jesus Montero. The good news is these three players are very young and still have a lot of room to grow. The most interesting thing about the infield is there are no real position battles this Spring but there are prospects who are very close to the Majors right behind the established starters.
