Spring Training 2014, Bullpen Preview

It’s Opening Day! Spring Training always seems to drag on for a week too long. I guess the promise of real, this-time-it-counts baseball makes everything in March drag on and on. I’m wrapping up my 2014 season preview of the Mariners with a look at the Bullpen. I’ve already covered the infield, the outfield, and the starting rotation. If you haven’t read those yet, take a look to get the full picture of where the Mariners find themselves at the start of this year.

It was a rough year of transition for the bullpen last year. The incumbent closer, Tom Wilhelmsen lost his job after his walk rate spiked to 5 per nine innings and his strikeout rate dropped to just under 7 per nine innings. Overall, the group had the second highest ERA in the majors at 4.58 but their collective FIP was just 3.79. Perhaps it was the relative inexperience of the bullpen that drove their ERA so high when their peripheral stats tell us they should be right around league average. The majority of the ‘pen is returning with a few new faces. Let’s hope that one more year of development from our young pitchers will be supported by these new veterans.

This weekend was all about reliving Mariners history as Ken Griffey Jr was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame and the former Seattle Pilots came to town for a three game series. It was disappointing then when the Mariners allowed twenty runs to score in three games and only mustered seven of their own. Luckily we came away with a win, sparing us from the sweep but it was definitely a disappointing week all around.

Mariners Rebound After Meltdown in Boston

The Mariners started the week with a tough series in Boston against one of the best teams in the AL. A sweep later and the Mariners were off to Baltimore. The last two games in the Boston series were particularly frustrating losses; our #1 and #2 starters didn’t factor into either decision and both were walk-off losses, one in the fifteenth and one in the ninth. After losses like that, you might expect a disheartened team to throw in the towel against a good Baltimore team but the Mariners bounced back and scored 19 runs in three games against the Orioles, winning two of three.

  • Big news today as the Mariners have called up Mike Zunino from AAA-Tacoma. In his first full year as a professional, Zunino has hit .238/.303/.503. He has certainly showed his strong power potential but he is not a polished hitter and has struggled against advanced AAA pitching recently. This is clearly a desperate move by the front office to try and salvage something positive from this season. But rushing unprepared prospects is not the answer to the problems this team faces. The roster is still full of veteran stopgaps and hasn’t yet been stripped down like Houston or Miami so what’s the point in bringing up Zunino? If Zunino is on his way, shouldn’t we be calling up all of our other prospects to see which of them will stick? Dave Cameron at USS Mariner makes an excellent argument for why this move signals the end of the Jack Z era in Seattle.
