Mariners Lose, Then Win, Confuse Everyone

Week 4 Recap

Date Home Team Score Away Team Score Result
4/22 Astros 1 Mariners 7 W
4/23 Astros 3 Mariners 2 L
4/24 Astros 10 Mariners 3 L
4/25 Mariners 6 Angels 0 W
4/26 Mariners 3 Angels 6 L
4/27 Mariners 3 Angels 2 W
4/28 Mariners 2 Angels 1 W
  • Well that was an interesting week. After dropping two of three to the Astros, the Mariners returned home to face the Angels and won three out of four. We’re now sitting in sole possession of third place in the AL West despite losing four of six against the Astros. If we had just gone 4-2 against them, we would be just one game behind Oakland and four behind Texas.

Wasting Felix Hernandez, Ace Pitcher

Earlier this week, in my Mariners weekly recap, I mentioned something that I want to take a deeper look at today. Since the beginning of September, 2012, the Mariners have gone 2-9 in games started by Felix Hernandez. That statistic is pretty staggering so I wanted to look into it a bit more. What have Felix’s stats looked like during this period? How do they compare to other pitchers around the league during the same period? This is just a thought exercise, nothing that’s supposed to be definitive or predictive. I’m just curious about Felix and the way he’s pitched in recently and how the Mariners have played when he’s on the mound.

Mariners Vanquished by Strikeouts, Pitching

Week 3 Recap

Date Home Team Score Away Team Score Result
4/15
4/16 Mariners 2 Tigers 6 L
4/17 Mariners 1 Tigers 2 L/14
4/18 Mariners 2 Tigers 0 W
4/19 Rangers 7 Mariners 0 L
4/20 Rangers 5 Mariners 0 L
4/21 Rangers 11 Mariners 3 L
  • The Mariners had some tough pitching matchups this week, facing Doug Fister, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and Yu Darvish all in the span of four days. But they didn’t do any better against the likes of Nick Tepesch, Derek Lowe, and Justin Grimm. Mariner hitters were flailing at pitches this week with a combined total of seventy-two strikeouts. Their swing happy ways are reflected in their record this week. We we’re lucky to escape with a single win (against Justin Verlander!).

A Double Helping of Mariners Goodness

This is the first in a new series of weekly recaps for the 2013 Seattle Mariners season. Every Monday, I’ll recap the past week’s games, take a look at individual performances and preview the upcoming week. I missed the first week so this week only will be a double helping of Mariners goodness.

Week 1 & 2 Recap

Date Home Team Score Away Team Score Result
4/1 Athletics 0 Mariners 2 W
4/2 Athletics 1 Mariners 7 W
4/3 Athletics 6 Mariners 2 L
4/4 Athletics 8 Mariners 2 L
4/5 White Sox 7 Mariners 8 W/10
4/6 White Sox 4 Mariners 3 L
4/7 White Sox 4 Mariners 3 L/10
4/8 Mariners 3 Astros 0 W
4/9 Mariners 9 Astros 16 L
4/10 Mariners 3 Astros 8 L
4/11 Mariners 3 Rangers 4 L
4/12 Mariners 3 Rangers 1 W
4/13 Mariners 1 Rangers 3 L
4/14 Mariners 4 Rangers 3 W
  • The Mariners got off to a decent start on the road splitting their series in Oakland and coming very close to winning the series in Chicago. Once the Mariners got home, their results were a mixed bag, losing their series with Houston and splitting their series with the Rangers. Overall, I think it was a positive two weeks, especially considering the state of our rotation and the injuries to Michael Saunders and Mike Morse.

Rethinking Success

For this post, I wanted to try something different. I began this post with paper and pen (I know, archaic) and later transposed it electronically. It’s more of a stream of thoughts than an carefully edited piece of writing. Here we go.

In the last month, both Megan and I have been offered new jobs, both of which we decided to accept. It’s been a very exciting time for both of us. After getting married in May, we faced some uncertainty in our future. Both of us were in unsustainable jobs and we were unsure whether we would be staying in Bellingham for any length of time. Both of these new jobs provide a stability and certainty to our lives that we haven’t enjoyed together until now.
